Anna Vinnitskaya Schostakowitsch 2. Klavierkonzert

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 19:00
Anna Vinnitskaya (Piano), Mahler Chamber Orchestra und Teilnehmer*innen der MCO Academy NRW, Elim Chan (Conductor)
The Essen Philharmonic commemorates Dmitri Shostakovich's 50th death anniversary with four evenings this season. His works, often reflecting the somber Soviet reality, possess profound beauty. His second piano concerto, however, stands out as cheerful, brilliant, blissful, and spirited. Pianist Anna Vinnitskaya considers its second movement among the most beautiful music she knows. Equally stunning is Sergei Prokofiev's fifth symphony, composed in 1944, a "song to free and happy people." Elim Chan conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, who, along with Vinnitskaya, prepare chamber music surprises. The concert has no intermission and includes a "Close-up" at 5:45 PM and a "Late Night" at 9 PM. A child-friendly introduction is also offered.

Anna Vinnitskaya | MCO Academy | Mahler Chamber Orchestra | Elim Chan

Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 18:00
Anna Vinnitskaya (Piano), MCO Academy (Ensemble), Mahler Chamber Orchestra (Ensemble), Elim Chan (Conductor)
Shostakovich and Prokofiev were repeatedly targeted by Soviet art critics. Prokofiev appeased them with his heroic Fifth Symphony, while Shostakovich did so with his highly virtuosic 2nd Piano Concerto, brilliantly performed by Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya. Vinnitskaya, who won the ECHO Klassik award in 2014 for her recording of the concerto, is now accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Elim Chan. Prokofiev's 5th Symphony, written in 1944 during the Soviet victory over Nazi troops, also displays combative traits.

Chan & Ott

Sat, Mar 29, 2025, 20:00
Elim Chan (Conductor), Alice Sara Ott (Piano), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
When she grew up, Alice Sara Ott wanted to be a »pianist or Chancellor Kohl«. She was just five at the time. We now of course know what came of it: she became one of the acclaimed pianists of our time. At one time a hyped young artist, she has become a stunning interpreter, and she’s now performing the new piano concerto by an American multi-talent: Bryce Dessner composes masterfully for stage, concert hall, and numerous film scores as well; at the same time, he’s the guitarist of the indie rock band The National. What an exciting duo.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Steven Isserlis / Elim Chan

Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Steven Isserlis (Cello), Elim Chan (Conductor)
»I want interaction. I want people to feel something. I want them to ask questions,« explained Elim Chan in an interview. The Hong Kong-born conductor is currently one of the most sought-after musicians of her generation. The Vienna Musikverein dedicated a three-part portrait series to her in the 2022/23 season. And after Elim Chan’s debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2022, the press wrote euphorically of a »miracle of control and understanding«. In this concert, Elim Chan has a musician at her side who is one of only two living cellists to have been inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame and who continues to captivate audiences with his unique musicianship: Steven Isserlis. He plays Joseph Haydn’s long-lost Cello Concerto in C major, in which late Baroque solemnity is combined with the virtuosity of Viennese Classicism. The elegant lightness of the concerto conceals highly demanding passages that require a great deal of dexterity from the soloist.
